The lead rule for older rentals
New Jersey's Department of Community Affairs requires inspection for lead-based paint hazards in single-family, two-family and multiple rental dwellings built before 1978. Inspections are due every three years or at tenant turnover, whichever is earlier, and a lead-safe certificate is valid for two years. Houses built in 1978 or later and some seasonal rentals are exempt. A colonial-era or early 20th-century house is clearly in the pre-1978 group, but check your own year built and your certificate date.
